Our Mission
The Little Harbour PTA brings together the students, faculty, families and community. We subsidize enrichment activities so that every child can access and experience an equal world of activities. We believe in our teachers and in their ability to provide an incredible education at Little Harbour. It is our critical role as parents to help give these educators the tools they need to help our children grow, learn, and prepare for their place in the world.
Our Impact
Our 2024-2025 fundraising goal of $50,000 will go toward the 2025-2026 school year. We fundraise a year in advance so we can ensure we have a generous budget to help support our teachers and fund enrichment programs for every student.
Here are just some of the programs we help provide:
Teacher Supplies
None of our teachers should have to spend their own money on supplies. We do what we can to help out, giving every classroom teacher and many additional staff an annual stipend to buy things not provided by the school district. In the past, we’ve helped supply Chromebooks, iPads, Promethean boards, and more!
Environmental Camp
All 5th grade students attend Camp Calumet for a three night, four day outdoor educational experience. Students learn about the water, forest and animal communities while hiking, canoeing and exploring nature.
Artist in Residence
A visiting artist spends 1-2 weeks working with LHS students in their specified field. Students get the chance to learn and experience a new or different activity that they would not get the chance to do at LHS.
Field Trips
We fund field trips for students in all grades to take advantage of the many cultural and historical sites in our region. To name just a few things: kids go hiking, bowling, swimming, and visit farms, historical sites like Strawbery Banke, Boott Cotton Mills Museum, and see shows at venues like The Music Hall.

Community, Learning & Growth
The Little Harbour School Garden Program utilizes the existing gardens and outdoor classroom as inclusive, interactive and educational environments that foster community, hands-on learning, and a deeper connection to nature and small-scale food growing practices. The program continues to highlight the well-established seasonal vegetable garden curriculum and has expanded to include the establishment of a pollinator garden, a garden waste composting station and rainwater collection systems, as well as a bird feeding garden, offering students a holistic experience in the garden-to-table process, sustainability, and the importance of biodiversity. The gardens emphasize sustainable, organic, chemical-free practices and prioritize native and heirloom species.
Then and Now
The Little Harbour Vegetable Garden was established in 2010 by a small but mighty group of parent volunteers. They envisioned a three-part mission:
To establish a self-sustaining garden as a place of hands-on learning and a way to teach students about healthy and adventurous eating by supplementing cafeteria offerings with fresh produce grown on-site by the students.
Their mission was achieved and made possible by parent and community volunteers over the years and has remained a beloved and enriching seasonal activity for generations of LHS students.
Building off of the original mission, today’s garden activities have broadened to include additional garden spaces on the LHS campus and an expanded curriculum.

Little Harbour’s Learning Gardens
Vegetable Garden: Grade-level planting curriculum each spring that brings students back the following fall to harvest what they planted. Produce is prepared in the LHS kitchen and offered a “tastings” during harvest week.
Lydia’s Pollinator Garden: A revisioned memorial garden that emphasizes observation, interaction and appreciation for the cycle of life through the lens of pollinators and native plants.
Outdoor Classroom: A seasonally changing setting that invites students and teachers to benefit from fresh air and sunshine while learning outdoors.
Bird Feeding Garden: Within view of several classrooms, this small garden hosts native plants that support birds throughout the seasons.
